LJ Nelles

Community Theatre, Arts and Youth

Multi-media, Theatre and Educational Consultant

LJ Nelles is a professional actor, director and an educational consultant, writer and producer of educational multi-media. She has 25 years of teaching and coaching experience including school-based and community arts-based peacebuilding initiatives through integrated arts (music, drama, movement, visual arts, gardening, storytelling) and literacy.

LJ uses drama, acting and voice as sites of self-learning and social transformation. Her background includes using drama and theatre to encourage at risk youth to discover strengths and create work based on their experiences that toured throughout their localized communities. LJ has worked to bring these powerful tools for change to members of the larger community.

Through developing self-awareness and using theatre and storytelling as a medium of expression, LJ firmly believes we can both examine issues and understand one another. Part of the project of building peace, transforming conflict and being present with one another, involves discovering and presenting the social and cultural issues that impact upon our lives.

For the past 12 years LJ has worked at the University of Toronto teaching communication skills to health care students and professionals through simulation and role play. LJ is currently working on her PhD in theatre and performing medicine.
